Interview with Chantelle Fitzgerald

● How long have you been doing what you do and how did you get into being a Mindfulness & EQ Trainer?

Well this is a bit of a long story, but bare with me...it will really help you to see my journey and how I got to where I am...

I have been into some form of mindfulness, yoga, spirituality and emotional intelligence for over 15 years. I have worked in every sector except for the government. Believe it or not, I was a French Major in college and studied abroad and lived in France for 8 months. I came back to the US and taught French to middle school and highschool students. Then I realized I was disciplining kids more than I was actually teaching French and decided to switch gears.

Thus, the most logical step was to get into pharmaceutical sales. Why not!? LOL! Educating the doctors about your products, it’s the same type of thing! :-) So, I worked for Pfizer Pharmaceuticals and sold cardiovascular medications for 6 years and then got laid off in 2009 with the downturn of the economy.

Thus, I switched it up again and got into the nonprofit sector as I wanted to do more mission based work. I went back to school and received a Master’s in NonProfit Leadership from the University of Pennsylvania. I then worked in the non-profit sector for the next 7 years. I worked for the American Heart Association, EF Education First, Higher Education and was the President of the Cheyney Foundation the first HBCU (Historically Black College and Universities) in the nation.

However, the catalyst in my journey to deepen my mindfulness practice and knowledge around emotional intelligence came when I was laid off for the 2nd time in my life. I had moved from Philadelphia to Boston for an amazing job working in international education. I loved my boss, and worked harder than I ever had in building an entire study abroad program in the midwest from scratch. However, after 6 months of being there my boss moved to a different department, and a new boss took over the department. 6 months later I got laid off!

This time, I was completely devastated. I mean, devastated. I moved my whole life to Boston only for it to not work out after a year. It really hurt because I had given this job my all.

I then ended up moving back home with my parents at the age of 34, with no job, and feeling completely lost. To make matters worse, I was beating myself up that I was not married, I had no kids and feeling like a complete failure in life. Afterall, by the time you are at least 34 “society” says that you should be married and have at least 1 or 2 kids. All of my friends were married, they had kids or were expecting, and had good jobs. Plus, the embarrassment of moving to Boston and coming back home after a year was completely heartbreaking for me. I fell into a little bit of a depression.

Knowing that I needed to get out of this funk, I decided I needed to do something. I looked up meditation classes around me and it just so happened that, that day was the last day to sign up. That was over 4 years ago and I have been meditating ever since and it has completely changed my life.

In fact, my meditation practice took me deeper and deeper into myself. I took several classes on mindfulness, (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)-- 8 week course out of the University of Pennsylvania) I did a 10- Day Vipassana Silent Meditation retreat and I ended up applying and getting certified in the Search Inside Yourself Program (a program founded out of Google that blends mindfulness + emotional intelligence + neuroscience). After a year long intensive program I became certified to teach mindfulness and Emotional Intelligence.

You see, I also realized through my meditation practice, that all throughout my career, no matter what sector I was in-- education, corporate America, non-profit, higher education, there were always “sticky & tricky” situations in the workplace, whether that is dealing with difficult clients, colleagues, supervisors, etc.

I realized, no one ever teaches you how to deal with the emotions as it relates to being laid off. No one will ever teach you how to deal with stress in the workplace or at least give you the tools to manage very specific situations, such as negative encounters with your boss or colleagues. There is no roadmap, guide or personal development plan when you get stuck. Thus, I wanted to teach you ways to manage these “sticky” and “tricky” situations in the workplace.

Now it gives me complete pleasure to provide very specific, tangible tools to individuals that are also going through “sticky & tricky” situations at home or work and help to create a personal and individualized personal and professional development plan to help my clients reach their goals.

Who are your clients exactly?

My clients are quite diverse and come from all different types of backgrounds.

What happens if you haven't yet worked with people in my field?

Everyone experiences stress, anxiety, frustration, sadness, etc. It doesn’t matter what field you are in. The tools that we teach in the program are designed to help anyone that may be going through a difficult challenge at work or at home. Additionally, we work with our clients to help them create a specific plan specifically for their needs.

How are you different from other "mindfulness and emotional intelligence trainers?"

What makes us different from other trainers and organizations is that we focus on supporting our clients in helping them create a personal and/or professional development plan based on their needs while also providing very specific and tangible science based tools to help with very specific challenges whether it is at work or at home. If clients choose the package that includes the #PowerInThePause course, clients will have several tools to support their development plan. For example, tools to help increase self-awareness, tools to manage strong emotions, tools to help with being more kind to oneself, etc. We specialize in helping people increase their overall well-being through tools.

What type of person do you work best with and what is expected of me?

The people who do really well in this program are those that are excited and motivated to learn more tools and willing to follow the training and homework laid out in the coaching. The person that does well, shows up on time, does the homework, is engaged, asks questions and is committed to making a difference in their life. These are the clients that exceed. Of course we all get distracted or have bad days, etc, but it’s important that we pick ourselves up. We are here to support this, however, only you can do the work. The expectation is that you come with an attitude of openness, determination, commitment and curiosity.

For what type of professional is this program NOT going to work?

This program will NOT work for people who are not interested in improving themselves. It is not for people who do not want a personal plan to get them to where they want to go. It is not for someone that is not committed, open or willing to make the necessary changes to get better results. If you are not willing to do the work, this program is not for you.

Why is the program 9 - 6 - 3 months long?

The programs are 9, 6, and 3 months long because it takes time to integrate a new practice in your life. Mindfulness is not easy. Keeping a daily meditation practice is not easy. It will take time. It will take patience, it will take a community, it will take commitment and accountability. The longer you work with this practice the longer it will become a lifestyle change and you will see tremendous benefits in your life the longer you “stick” with the practice. 3 months is the minimum amount of time to be able to apply the tools and to support you through the program and have a more meaningful results.

Does this really work?

That really depends on you and how much you put into the course/program. What you put into it, you will get out of it. 100%. Therefore, if you come ready to learn, put the tools to good use, follow the program we put together, you are consistent with your daily meditation practice and journaling exercises you will see great results. Please see testimonials for additional results.

How quickly can I expect results?

You will receive quicker results if you are committed to a daily meditation practice. You can also get mini-results instantly from just practicing the mini - mindfulness practices you will be taught. However, the ultimate transformation will take longer and depending on how committed you are to your daily practice will result in a major transformation of a lighter one.

Can we re-up the coaching?

Yes, it is always possible to re-up the coaching for another 3 months.
